I had a fall and broke my humerus. It was a painful break and so the hospital scheduled me the next day for surgery to put a plate with screws in to repair the issue. The first red flag was that I was prepped for surgery the next day and all of a sudden Dr. Stephenson came to me and said he couldn’t do the surgery because he needed to go see his patients in his practice. For some reason the hospital was unable to get the room cleaned to do the surgery so surgery was postponed. The next day I was to be the first surgery, which was again delayed quite a bit, but was finally done. At two weeks I went, and he took out the staples and said OK start using the arm. I did, and started physical therapy. My physical therapist and I agreed during the rehab that something was not right with the surgery. The arm was clicking a lot and extremely painful and I mentioned the pain when I went in to him prior to starting physical therapy. I knew it was going to be painful and that wasn’t so much the issue as the arm was not getting better. I called the office and asked if I could be seen prior to my six week postop visit.? The front office told me that I needed permission from his MA, to be able to come in early. I left a message with the MA explaining the situation and asked for a returned phone call. She never called me back. I called again, and was told the same thing. But I did not leave another message. Over a week later., I received a call from the front office saying that they were returning my phone call. I indicated that I was trying to get in sooner because the issue with my arm and he said that he was sorry but He wasn’t given that message. I, in the meantime, scheduled with another doctor. I felt like I had to be seen. When I went to another surgeon, he did x-rays and showed me on the x-rays and my husband by the way. The screws from the plate they inserted had gone through the bone and into the Cartlidge. The new surgeon then indicated that probably needed a CT to see what it also showed. I had a CT done which indicated I had a torn rotator cuff and a torn labrum. Those issues were not addressed by that surgery. The new surgeon said I really probably would have been much better off having a reverse shoulder replacement. That option was never given to me. I now have to wait to to Have reverse shoulder replacement because of insurance. I am very frustrated with Dr. Stephenson and his staff. 9/17/21. Update-went to new surgeon and had a total reverse shoulder replacement to repair damage from accident as well as previous surgery. The great news is that at 3 weeks post op., I can already do more with this arm than I could at 3 months after the previous surgery, and I now only have minor pain. Please please do your homework before your surgery.
